Crop Name: Bitter Gourd (Momordica charantia) – Long Type (OP variety) ? Seed Rate: Per acre: 1.0 – 1.2 kg Per hectare: 2.5 – 3.0 kg ? Sowing Season: South India: January–March & June–July North India: February–March & June–July In mild tropical areas, can be grown year-round with irrigation. ? Land Preparation: Plough the land 3–4 times to obtain fine tilth. Apply 10–15 tons FYM or compost per acre during last ploughing. Form ridges and furrows or pits, depending on irrigation facilities. ? Sowing Method: Ridge & Furrow Method: Sow 2–3 seeds per hill on one side of the ridge. Pit Method: Pits of 45 cm × 45 cm × 45 cm size at 2.0 m × 1.5 m spacing. Fill each pit with topsoil + 2 kg FYM + 50 g neem cake. ? Spacing: Between rows: 2.0 m Between plants: 1.5 m ? Seed Treatment: Soak seeds in water for 12 hours before sowing to improve germination. Treat seeds with Trichoderma viride or Pseudomonas fluorescens @ 10 g/kg seed to prevent fungal diseases. ? Germination: Seeds germinate in 7–10 days. Maintain uniform soil moisture (avoid waterlogging). ? Irrigation: First irrigation immediately after sowing. Subsequent irrigations every 4–5 days (summer) or 6–7 days (rainy season). Avoid excess water during flowering and fruiting stages. ? Intercultural Operations: Gap filling within 10 days. Weeding at 15 and 30 days after sowing. Provide bamboo pandal or trellis at 20–25 days for vine support and uniform fruit shape. ? Flowering & Fruiting: Starts 35–40 days after sowing. Harvest tender fruits every 2–3 days for continuous yield. ? Harvesting: First harvest at 55–60 days after sowing. Continue harvesting for 90–120 days. ? Expected Yield: 100–150 quintals/acre (10–15 tons/acre) under good management.
